"We wanted a system that was highly configurable and flexible enough to do that configuration long after the project was finished, for any future reforms."

About the Court

The South Australia Courts Administration Authority (CAA) was established in 1993 as a statutory authority independent of executive government control. According to their website, they are responsible for the provision of the administrative facilities and services necessary for participating courts and their staff to properly carry out their judicial and administrative functions.

The Challenge

South Australia's Courts Administration Authority serves over 1.71 million residents, and they were searching for a case management system that would modernize their operations and and merge their two separate systems into one. They also sought to extend information and services to the public over the internet.

The Solution

The modernization project included three primary pillars: administrative case management, online services, and judicial case management. The Courts Administration Authority partnered closely with Journal Technologies to establish these pillars, and the consistent communication between the two played a huge role in the implementation's success.

With Journal's expert guidance, the CAA successfully configured eCourt and its public portal and rolled it out in three stages: Probate in 2018, Civil in 2020, and Criminal in 2022. Through these various implementations, South Australia has improved both access to and delivery of justice.
